Dionisio and his family have cultivated coffee for 40 years and have, since 1980, maintained the oldest coffee varieties in the country. In recent years, the impact of coffee leaf rust caused substantial productivity losses, leaving the family with the only alternative of seeking technical assistance to improve the nutrition of soil with organic and foliar fertilizers that are friendly to the environment. The family also decided to update their facilities to improve their fermentation, washing, and drying processes.
This work paid off. After these changes were incorporated into their farming practices the family submitted their coffee in the Honduran Cup of Excellence, placing 4th place in 2011.
